Albert Joseph Desjarlais, a long-time resident of East Prairie Metis Settlement, passed away on September 22, 2021, in High Prairie, at the age of 89.
Albert was born August 25, 1932, in Moose Lake, near Forsythe, Alberta. For many years, Albert worked as a farmer and cowboy.
In addition to his passion for farming, Albert worked as an elder/mentor for 28 years with Alberta Justice, served for 25 years on AHS Wisdom & National Aboriginal Health Organization providing cultural support and advisement. He was a ceremonial pipe holder, medicine maker and knowledge keeper.
Albert loved to be on the land hunting, fishing, picking medicinal plants but his favorite thing was cutting and making hay for his horses and cows.
Survived by his wife Alma Desjarlais, sons and daughters; Valerie Desjarlais, Sharon Desjarlais, Arlene (Dave) Wallace, Marcel Desjarlais, Vernon (Kimberly) Desjarlais, Lana Desjarlais, Marlene Smith, Lenny Smith, Greg (Benita) Desjarlais, George (Amberly) Desjarlais, along with 36 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren and numerous traditional adopted children.
Predeceased by his father James Desjarlais; mother, Mary Louise Desjarlais; son, Gerald Desjarlais, and granddaughter Tonesha River Walker.
A Funeral Service for the late Albert Desjarlais will be held on September 27, 2021, in Frog Lake at the Frog Lake Community Hall with interment to follow at the Clear Water Lake Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the High Prairie Hospital.
