Joseph Hagman Young, 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 28, 2023 at his home in Courtyard at Jamestown in Provo, Utah. He was born March 24, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Don Carlos Young Jr. and Louise Teckla Hagman Young, the youngest of 5 children (Don, Romania, Marie, and Beth). He has always had a curious and adventurous mind, and thus had a wonderful boyhood at his childhood home in Holladay. His immediate and extended family were very close and involved with each other's lives. As he grew, he discovered his creativity and artistic talents. He was very interested in electronics and building and creating, which made for many stories of adventure with tree launching, rafts in the canal, chemistry experiments, and so on.

Serving his country in World War II in the Navy helped Joseph further his education in electronics. He also received a profound testimony of the gospel during this time, which charted the course of his life. He decided to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was called to the Great Lakes Mission where he met another missionary by the name of Frances Jeanne Hunter. After their mission, they began dating and were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 19, 1952.

Joseph was a devoted and supportive husband to Frances as she played violin in the Utah Symphony, and he also enjoyed the set of friends this brought into their lives. Along with other musicians' spouses, he accompanied many symphony tours as Frances performed around the world.

Joseph attended the University of Utah and studied Architecture. Upon graduation, he joined his father's architectural firm until his father's death. Joseph worked for the Church's building department for several years, being greatly involved in the building of uniform chapels across the United States (he became a licensed architect in all the states). Later, he joined two other architects, Steven Baird and Jim Jones, in a private firm of their own. He then formed his own firm, which he continued in until retirement. He designed many homes and commercial buildings with his own modern and unique style. He followed 3 principles: beauty, utility, and stability.

Joseph had an innate ability to make quick and dear friends. There were lots of rounds of golf, tennis, boating at Lake Powell and other Utah lakes, St. George trips, Lake Tahoe family vacations, and gospel study groups. Even in his later years he enjoyed his water aerobics group, drives to beautiful Utah places with his children, and any chance he could gather with others or explore new places. Throughout their lives, Joseph and Frances shared so much love and celebration time with extended family in their home hosting meals, parties, and an open door.

Missionary work was a theme of Joseph's life. He served a few stake missions, a mission to the Salt Lake County Jail, a joint Inner-City Mission with Frances, and always informally sharing God's truth with all around him. Joseph served as the bishop of the Valley View 9th Ward until he and Frances were called as Mission Presidents of the Ohio Cleveland Mission in 1979. That was one of their choicest experiences.

Joseph and Frances had 3 children who were all received with much gratitude and love: Randy, Ron, and Margaret. Theirs was a home full of love, extended family, music, boating, and laughter. Living in the Valley View 9th Ward brought many dear associations that continued throughout their lives. In 2011, they moved to Provo and were loved by the Edgemont 9th Ward for 10 years.

After Frances passed away in 2017, Joseph reconnected with Frances' friend, Claudia Knell, and they were married in 2018 for 19 bonus months until Claudia's death in 2019. In 2021, Joseph moved to Courtyard at Jamestown, where he has made such kind and faithful friends with the residents and staff. His care has been very sweet at this stage of his life. We are so grateful to those who have served him. We are thankful for the exceptional assistance A Plus hospice has provided.

Joseph is survived by his 3 children: Jon Randal, Ronald Joseph (Ann), and Margaret Jeanne (David) Tueller, 11 grandchildren: Joshua, Abby (Laird) Swensen, Amanda (Nicholas) Corotan, Rebecca (Elias) Wise, Stephanie (Adam) Keefe, Philip (Megan), Jonathan (Tanah), Michelle (Hunter) Riggs, Scott (Taylor), Diana (Dan) Hulme, Benjamin (Cierra), and 21 great-grandchildren: Madison, Jude, Quinn, Zeke, Van, Helam, Lily, Maria, Jack, Aribella, Finn, Joel, Levi, Lennon, Milo, Avery, Archer, Renley, Oliver, Hazel and Sterling with 3 more coming this spring/summer. He also dearly loved his nieces and nephews with whom he shared many of life's experiences: Paul, Carol, Mark, Marian, David, Janice, Collette, Nancy, Doug, C.Y., Tom, Alan, Marianne, Carolyn, and Sarah. He will be remembered for his love of God and his fellowmen.
