Alma Florence Flippo, 94, a resident of Paris since 1982 passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008. She was a resident of Legends Care Facility at the time of her death.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Chapel in Paris with burial to follow in Bluff Cemetery near Detroit.

Family visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 22, 1913, in the rural community of Midway near Detroit, a daughter of C.R. and Maudie Chumley Flippo. She graduated from Texas A&M-Commerce with both a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Education. She taught school in many rural schools such as Midway, Aiken Grove, Crossroads, Cunningham and Detroit, where she served as the home economics teacher for a number of years. Her last teaching position was with Blinn College in Brenham. After more than 30 years as a teacher, she accepted a position as home demonstration agent in Canton, and completed her career in South Texas as district agent for that area. She was active with youth, both in teaching and counseling throughout her career.

After moving to Paris she became active in numerous organizations and worked for several years as a volunteer in the auxiliary at McCuistion Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Baptist church wherever she lived and had belonged to First Baptist Church in Paris since her move to the city. She traveled extensively and many times served as a hostess, counselor, and guide for religious tours. She was proud to have traveled to all the continents and loved the involvement. After moving back to this area she became a regular at all homecoming activities of the Detroit schools.

She was a caregiver from an early age, having taken care of her mother and father during the last years of their lives. She moved her sister, Miriam Malone, into her home and cared for her after she was widowed and unable to care for herself. She wanted badly for her sister, Texie, to move in with her in Paris where she could look after her.

She loved the Lord, her family, and friends. She also became an advocate in the fair treatment and good care of animals.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Miriam Malone, Lois Evans and Mary Norwood; and brothers Hansford Flippo, C.B. Flippo and Douglas Flippo.

She is survived by one sister, Texie Gooch of Detroit; nephews, Charles Norwood, Bruce Evans and Carroll Ray Flippo; nieces, Jean Maples, Joyce Courtright and Arlene Lawley; and many other relatives and friends.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, those who wish can make a memorial to the Bluff Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, Detroit Lions Community Library Fund, or a charity of choice.
