On a Manhattan Street

Henry J. Smith, 88, of 180 Hatfield Pl., Port Richmond, died unexpectedly yesterday while walking in Manhattan at 5th Ave and 42nd St.

A Princes Bay summer resident for 50 years, Mr. Smith had been a permanent Island resident since 1948. He and his wife, Mrs. Anna Mina Smith, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Feb. 22.

Born in London, Mr. Smith migrated to Canada 70 years ago and then, shortly afterward, to Manhattan. He retired 20 years ago as a linotype operator for the Brooklyn Weekly Chat and was a 60-year member of Local 6, International Typographical Union. He was a charter member of the Princes Bay Yacht Club.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Henry J of White Plains and William M of Malverne, LI; a brother, Frank W of Sussex, NJ and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be Friday from the McCallum-Rice Funeral Home. Mass will be offered at 10 am in Our Lady Star of the Sea, RC Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Rossville.
