Army Cpl. Griner was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York, as a health care specialist. Griner died of injuries sustained when his vehicle struck a mine during combat operations in Helmand Province. Aaron grew up in Brandon, Florida, in a devout Catholic family. He attended Sacred Heart Academy in Tampa from kindergarten on. As a young child, he battled a slight learning disability but later he passed the GED test and began searching for a career path. After working at various odd jobs and traveling to Costa Rica with family, he decided to join the military in 2004. He hoped to learn a medical career in the Army so he could possibly be a paramedic after his tour of duty was over. Aaron's son was born February 10, just weeks before he left for Afghanistan. The Army delayed his deployment so he could be home for the birth. Once in Afghanistan, the 6 foot 2, blue eyed Army medic delivered humanitarian services, which suited his easygoing, peace-loving personality. However, contact with his family became less frequent after moving to a frontline base; his father last heard from him in May. Aaron loved novelist Kurt Vonnegut, comedians Chris Farley and Adam Sandler, Corona beer, and soccer. His awards include a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife Amanda and young son.
