Kathleen Bailey, age 89, of Appleton, passed away at Heritage Woods in Appleton, on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. Kathleen was born on October 5, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late John and Annie Nolan Granahan. Kathleen was raised in Chicago, Illinois, and graduated from Immaculata High School. She worked for Illinois Bell as a young woman and left to join the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. Kathleen proudly served her country as a Yeoman, 2nd Class during the war. While in the Coast Guard, Kathleen met Matthew Bailey; they were wed on October 21, 1944, in Cleveland. He preceded her in death in 1974. After her time in the Coast Guard, she raised a family and later resumed her career at Illinois Bell as an operator and worked her way into management. In April of 2010, Kathleen took the Old Glory Honor Flight for WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. and enjoyed the trip tremendously. Kathleen was involved in sewing, upholstery, and community service organizations. With her husband, she worked tirelessly to bring St. Colette Catholic Church and School to the new community of Rolling Meadows, Illinois. She later moved to Appleton where she enjoyed new friendships, water aerobics, and working with women in her retired women's veteran group. Most of all she enjoyed time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Tom Duffy, Appleton; her son, Mark Bailey, Park Ridge, Illinois; her grandchildren, Kate, Bridget and Patrick Duffy, and Matthew and Nathaniel Bailey. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Nancy Jack Heneghan and Eileen Lou Mustico, and her brothers, John Rose Granahan and William Joan Granahan. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1617 W. Pine Street, Appleton, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Heritage Woods Hospice Care Residence for their loving care.
