* ILA MAE STEGEBERG PENNINGTON DIES
Ila Mae Stegeberg Pennington, 74, who retired in 1988 as nursing supervisor at the Knollwood Nursing Home in Millersville, died July 27 at her home in Crownsville. She had suffered a stroke and a heart attack.

Mrs. Pennington was in nursing for 30 years, specializing in geriatric care. She had worked at the Randolph Hills Nursing Home at Methodist State Hospital in Mitchell, S.C., where she received her nursing degree, and as a private duty nurse in Evanston, Ill. She also trained at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Mrs. Pennington was a native of Woonsocket, S.D., and moved to the Washington area in 1958. The sister-in-law of former senator George S. McGovern (D-S.D.), she served as assistant national director of Senior Citizens for McGovern during the 1972 presidential campaign. She also was a director of the Woman's Suburban Democratic Club in Montgomery County and a member of the Woman's National Democratic Club.

She was a volunteer with Common Cause and a member of the Commission on Aging in Montgomery, which gave her an award for her work; Cedar Lane Unitarian Church in Bethesda; and the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Annapolis.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Robert Pennington of Crownsville; four children, Sharon Pennington of Kansas City, Kan., Judith Pennington of Cambridge, Md., Robert Pennington Jr. of Gaithersburg and Patricia Pennington of Mesa, Ariz.; her twin sister, Eleanor McGovern of Washington, and their sister Phyllis Riffe of Jamestown, N.D.; and six grandchildren.
