Mr. Van Zanten was born in Ballard.
After graduating from Anchorage High School, Mr. Van Zanten served in the Army Infantry in Alaska and India during World War II, from 1941 to 1946.
He married Margaret Maloney in Juneau, Alaska, following a previous marriage to Kathleen Kepler.
As a civil engineer he located most of the roads in south-central Alaska, where he lived until moving to Sequim at the age of 76.
He enjoyed fishing, rock hounding and traveling in his recreational vehicle.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Alaska and a member of Pioneers of Alaska and Yukon Pioneers of Seattle.
Survivors include his wife of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law David and Mary Van Zanten; sons Tom Van Zanten of Homer, Alaska, and Terry Joe Van Zanten of Talkeetna, Alaska; daughters and sons-in-law Jacqueline "Jackie" and Mike Richardson of Turkey and Marlyn and Steve Twitcheel-Kallick of Seattle; daughter Kathleen Twitchell of Sequim; sister Dorothy Secondi of Ephrata; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by daughter Beth Van Zanten and sisters Helen Gilbert and Bertha Porter.
Services: Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, Washington, is in charge of arrangements.
