She was predeceased by : her parents, Laurice Westbrook Whisonant and Daniel Fulton Whisonant; and her husband Thomas Glenn Sparrow. She is survived by : her sons, Danny Sparrow (Sherri) and Glenn Sparrow (Annette); her grandchildren, Justin Sparrow, Sawyer Sparrow (Elizabeth), Emily Sparrow (Alex) and Steven Sparrow; her great grandchild Sonny Sparrow; and her sister Jean Whisonant Gaston. She is also survived by her family - a caring and generous mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 20th 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Union Presbyterian Church (5615 Union Rd, Gastonia, NC 28056). Joy was born on January 20, 1932, a daughter of the late Laurice Westbrook Whisonant and Daniel Fulton Whisonant. She was a 1950 graduate of Belmont High School where she served as secretary of her freshman and junior classes. Joy also played basketball and was the best all-around girl of her senior class. She later received a bachelor's degree in health and physical education and a master's degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Joy led a fulfilling career as an educator, teaching health and physical education at Gray High School in Winston-Salem, NC; Freeport High School in Freeport, NY; Sarasota Jr. High School in Sarasota, FL; Peace College in Raleigh, NC; and Sacred Heart College in Belmont, NC. After retirement, she continued fostering a love for education as a mentor in Gaston County Schools.
An active participant in her community, Joy was a lifelong member of Union Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, circle chairman, deacon and an elder. She was involved in numerous organizations, including the Belmont Historical Society, the DAR, the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association, and the YMCA.
Joy had a diverse range of interests such as gardening, playing tennis, swimming, and conducting genealogical research. Her passion for family history shines through in her book, Sparrows' Nest of Letters, published in 2011.
In addition to her parents, Joy was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Glenn Sparrow. She is survived by her sons, Danny (Sherri) Sparrow and Glenn (Annette) Sparrow; grandchildren, Justin Sparrow, Sawyer (Elizabeth) Sparrow, Emily (Alex) Sparrow, and Steven Sparrow; great-grandson, Sonny Sparrow; and sister, Jean Whisonant Gaston.
Joy was the beloved matriarch of her family - a caring and generous mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She had a sweet disposition, and in her later years, she made many friends at Covenant Village whom she cherished dearly.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation from 2:00 pm until 3:00pm on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Union Presbyterian Church. A funeral service will be held at 3:00pm at Union Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
