Professional Basketball Player. He grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. In high school, he played basketball for the Lawrence North Wildcats where he won a State Championship during the 1988-1989 season, he was thereafter named the MVP. He was selected as a McDonald's All American in 1990. That same year, he was also selected to USA Today's All-USA First Team. He was a multi-sport athlete who also played baseball and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs with the 1,547th overall pick in the 1994 draft. He decided to take a different path though, and pursued basketball instead. He chose to play for the North Carolina Tarheels after his high school team won the Indiana State Championship. With North Carolina, he was part of the team that won the NCAA Championship in 1993 over Michigan. He was selected ninth overall in the 1994 NBA draft. During his first year in the NBA, he averaged ten points a game and was selected to the 1995 Rookie All Star Game. However, he would never play to this level again. He played nine seasons in the NBA for teams such as the Boston Celtics, the Dallas Mavericks, the New Jersey Nets, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Detroit Pistons and the Toronto Raptors. After his NBA career, he was a color commentator on the Tar Heel Sports Network during Men's Basketball broadcasts. He also founded the organization Vaccine Ambassadors and worked for the Rams Club at the University of North Carolina as a principle gifts fundraiser. During his playing career, he founded the Eric Montross Fathers Day Basketball Camp in 1994. This camp went on to raise over one million dollars for the UNC children's hospital. In March 2023, it was revealed that Eric had been diagnosed with cancer and that he would be receiving treatment at the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center. His passing was announced by UNC basketball the morning after his death.
