John S. Covert was listed as age 10 on the 1850 Harrison County, Ohio census. He was listed with his father, his father's second wife, and two siblings.

Civil War files from Ancestry.com, the 1885, 1895, & 1905 Coffey County, Kansas State census reports, and a GAR record from Post #190 at LeRoy, all record his service in Co. H, 1st Ohio Light Artillery Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted in October of 1861 and mustered out in October of 1864, serving for three years. There is also a pension record for him and his widow.

John S. Covert was listed as a minister on the 1870 Harrison County, Ohio census with his wife. They were listed at LeRoy, Coffey, Kansas by 1880, where he was listed as a music teacher and dealer. The 1885 state census lists them with Llewellan age 18; Charles M., 10; Maude Belle, 4; & Harry Lee, 1.

John and Sarepta continued to live in Coffey County, Kansas. The 1900 census lists John's birth in August of 1840 in Ohio. The GAR record lists his age as 43 in 1883 and his birth in Harrison County, Ohio. Sarepta was a widow on the 1925 state census.
