Born in Oneida on November 20, 1958, he was the son of Raymond C. and Jean Marie Barker, Jr. A lifelong resident of Oneida, Bill was educated in Oneida schools. He enlisted in the USMC on September 3, 1976, he served six years in the USMCR before being honorably discharged as a Sgt (E5) in October 1982.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Barker was employed as a carpenter, Computer Program Designer and as an Associate for the local Wal-Mart. He was of Christian faith but belonged to no specific denomination. Mr. Barker attended Morrisville State College where he received an Associate's Degree in Computer Systems Technology and a Bachelor's Degree in Software Development and Data Base Management. He gave back to his community by coaching Little League Baseball for seven years and Oneida Pop Warner Football for twenty-five years.
Surviving are: his former wife, Sherry, his six children, Christopher J. Maxfield of Oneida, William J. (Hilary) Barker, Jr of Oneida, NY, Andrew J. (Jenn Murphy) Maxfield of Canastota, NY, Susan (Zach) Gillan of Liverpool, NY, Stacey Wallis of North Carolina and Whitney (Sara) Wallis of Columbia, SC; his brothers and sisters, Karen Scheil of Summerfield, FL, Randy (Marsue) Barker of Jacksonville, NC, Vicky (Scott) Arnold of Homeland, California, Edmund "Ed" (Diane) Barker of Oneida, NY, Sheri (Bill Rhodes) Barker of Asheville, NC, Robert (Nadyne) Barker of McKinney, TX and Raymond C. "Tiger" (Raymie) Barker III of McKinney, TX; one step-sister, Karen Schell of Maryland; seventeen grandchildren, Nathaniel Richard Ginter, Caleb Allen Ricketts, Tristan James Murphy, William Francis Murphy, Quentin Gregory Wallis, Katyra Savanna Hubbard, Shaina Victoria Isaacs, Gabrielle Elise Murphy, Mollie Lynne Barker, Domenik Raymond Maxfield, Shailyn Brielle Isaacs, Arabella Irene Hubbard, Lucia Celes Isaacs, Gracie Elizabeth Maxfield, Lila Angeline Gillan, Kairi Anne Isaacs, Noah Benson Sweet and several nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his loyal K-9 companion, Muffin.
There will be no formal funeral services or calling hours for Mr. Barker. Interment will be made at the convenience of the family in Oneida Castle Cemetery, next to his nephew Jeremy Scott Lasher and his mother and father, Ray and Jean Barker, Jr. Family and friends will be notified through the William J. Barker, Sr. Facebook page that will remain activated until after his internment.
