Pona Kortes (Lynch) Millard, a pioneer of Dell Valley, Texas, passed away on the evening of August 25, 2016, in Phoenix Arizona. Her birthday was Feb 20, 1925 and she was 91 years of age. Pona was born to Marie and Peter Kortes. In early childhood, she lived on a farm in Kent Washington and graduated from high school in Houston, Texas, attending both the Incarnate Word Academy and Brice High School. She attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas and the Medical and Surgical Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in San Antonio, Texas, graduating from there to become a registered nurse in 1947. In 1951 Pona married John Kevin (Jack) Lynch (+2008), and together they raised their seven children on the CL Ranch in Dell Valley. As an active member of the community, Pona coined the phrase "The Valley of Hidden Waters" to promote Dell Valley as a new destination. Pona had an innate sense of the beautiful, she wrote poetry and painted. She continued her education at the University of Texas at El Paso and practiced nursing into her late 70's. Caring for people and all living things was a fundamental part of her identity. Pona treasured her friendships with the families of Dell City and remained sincerely interested in the progress of the town; Dell City was always dear to her heart. In 2000, Pona married Roy Henry Millard (+2004) and together they lived in Prescott, Arizona. Since then, she was happy to call Phoenix her home and made many friends. She was deeply patriotic and held all who served in the armed forces in high regard. At the same time, she had empathy for the individuals and families who entered the United States through Ellis Island, as her father had when just a child. Pona traveled far and wide; to Greece, meeting her father's family, and many of the European countries as well. She discovered South Africa and went on safari, marveling at "God's amazing creatures". Pona volunteered for many years at the HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center to raise funds to provide for patient care programs and equipment. Pona is survived by her children, Anne Lynch Hansen, John Kevin Lynch II, Kathleen Kortes Lynch (Michel de Wouters d'Oplinter), Erin Lynch Dover (John), Laura Lynch, Kristina Lynch Martin (Wayne), and Peter Lynch (Raymie); her step-children, Robert Millard, and Susan Millard Davis (Steve); her grandchildren, Marie, Kenny, Michael, Sam, Leslie, John, Valentine (Damien Joachim), Robin (Alessandra Croppi), Rose, Mary, Asia (Marco Zaragoza), Ryan, Travis, Aedan, Claire and Samantha; her great-grandchildren Sydney, Artemio, Guillermo, Edgard, and Amelie. To celebrate Pona's life and accomplishments as a beautiful and unforgettable friend, wife, mother, nurse and American patriot, the family will have a memorial service at All Saints Episcopal Church, 6300 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85012, at 11:00 in the morning, Saturday, September 3, 2016.
