Mary Irene Terwilliger, 97, died on September 3, 2023 while in the care of Catalina Springs Memory Care and Aegis Hospice in Tucson, Arizona.

She was the wife of Charles R. Terwilliger for 57 years until his death on February 14, 2005. In her mind she remained married until the time of her death, which brought a longed for heavenly reunion.

She was born on April 6, 1926 in York, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Ethel Sara (Hildebrand) Ailes and Albert Carrick Ailes. She was baptized at and was a member of the First Moravian Church in York, Pennsylvania. She was a member of the 1945 mid-year graduating class of York High School.

She and her mother kept the home fires burning while her two brothers and father served in the US Navy during World War II. Mary worked in numerous jobs during her early adulthood but settled into her long-term work as a cafeteria lady for the York City School District, where she was employed for 24 years. She took great pride in her role of wife, mother and homemaker.

She always thought of York as home although she spent her retirement years in Florida. At age 92 she moved to be closer to her daughter, Lea, and spent her last few years in Wyoming, then Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her stillborn son, her father and mother, her brothers Charles E. Ailes and Richard C. Ailes, and two nephews. She is survived by her daughter Lea Grubbs (Gene) of Tucson, AZ; granddaughters Carley Udland (John) and Lindsey Grubbs (Tyler Doane); great grandchildren (Connor, Myles, Miriam, and Louisa Udland); and nieces and nephews.

Mary will be interred at her husband's gravesite at Bushnell Veteran's Cemetery when the family is able to gather.
