Retired Operator Of Coal Firm Dies At 74
Services for Earnest Love Brooks of 6896 Raleigh-LaGrange Road, retired operator of South Memphis Coal Co., will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with burial in Mt. Vernon Gardens.
Mr. Brooks, who was 74, died Tuesday afternoon at Baptist Hospital after a heart attack. Born in Grenada, Miss., he had lived here since about 1916.
He first worked for Orgill Bros. and Co., hardware and a coal company, before opening his own company in the late 1930s. He retired in 1954 and became an active investor in real estate. He attended Grimes Memorial Methodist Church.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lavelle Shaw Brooks of the home address; a son, Howard Brooks of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Hayes of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. L. G. Young of Whitehaven and Mrs. Jack Green and Miss Stella Brooks, both of Memphis.
