Mrs. Clare Dreyfus Rites Set Thursday

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday for Mrs. Clare B. Dreyfus, 77, a member of the Milwaukee School Board for 21 years.

Mrs. Dreyfus, of 3621 N. 39th St., died Monday of a heart attack at Luther Manor, 4545 N. 39th St., where she had been hospitalized since June when she was stricken by a heart attack while vising her son in Stevens Point.

Although she had not been able to attend a meeting since June, Mrs. Dreyfus was known as one of the hardest working board members and went on board field trips to various schools and educational centers in Milwaukee whenever possible.
She once suggested that a fitting epitaph for herself would be "Gone to another meeting."

Served 21 Years
Mrs. Dreyfus was appointed to the board in 1948 to fill a vacancy but was defeated a year later in a bid to keep the position. However, she was elected to a full six-year term in 1951 and was re-elected in 1957, 1963, and 1969.

During her years on the board, she served on every major committee and was chairman of the Public Relations Committee and vice chairman of the Building Committee at the time of her death.

She also was known for her work with the PTA and was president of the Wisconsin Congress of Parents and Teachers from 1949-'51 and a past president of both the City Congress PTAs and her local Townsend PTA.

In 1955, the city congress established the Clare Dreyfus Scholarship for high school pupils who planned to become teachers.
She was a delegate to the White House Conference on Children and Youth in 1950 and was named Wisconsin Mother of the Year by former Gov. Walter Kohler the following year.

Mrs. Dreyfus began her career in community service more than 50 years ago when she became a Red Cross volunteer during World War I. She continued working with the Red Cross as a member of the Youth and Nursing Services Committee.

She was honored by the Lane Bryant Award Committee for outstanding volunteer and community service in 1957 and 1958 and was named the Outstanding School Board Member in Wisconsin Education Association.

Mrs. Dreyfus was born in Milwaukee and attended South Division High School. She worked for a time as a dental hygienist.
Her husband, Woods O. Dreyfus, who had been a singer and radio announcer for several Wisconsin stations during the early days of radio here, died in 1965.

A son, Lee S. Dreyfus, is president of the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point.

Services Thursday
In addition to Lee, she is survived by two sons, Neal, Brown Deer, and Woods B., Milwaukee; a brother Byron Bluett, Milwaukee; and two sisters, Mrs. Betty Toepfer, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Dorothy Helling, Racine.

Services will be held at St. Peter's Evangelical Ltheran Church, 3908 W. Capitol Dr., at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
The body will be at the Harder Funeral Home, 4217 W. Fond du Lac Ave., from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The family suggested donations to the scholarship fund or to the church.
