Sheryl Mae Rhoades, 72 of Greenfield, Indiana passed away on August 19, 2021. She was born on November 11, 1948, in Marion, Ohio to the late Eugene and Eva Dell (Schwaderer) Reith. She resided in Marion County Ohio until her retirement, at which time she moved to Indiana.
She is survived by her children, a son, Sean (Carey) Rhoades of Nevada, Ohio and her daughter, Shanna (Jason) Sharp of Arlington, Indiana. She was the proud Nana/Gma to Ashley (Elliott) Smith, Erin Rhoades, Hayden Rhoades, Makenzie Sharp and Gavin Sharp and her great-granddaughter Maisyn Smith.
Sheryl served as Executive Director of Heart of Ohio Mentoring/Big Brother Big Sisters of Marion County for ten years, prior to her retirement. During her tenure she initiated after-school and summer programs and applied for and received local, state, and federal grants to increase funding for these and similar programs. She co-founded a Cyber-Safe Program with the Marion County Sheriff's Dept. which taught community awareness of potential dangers for children on the Internet and safety tips for parents. In 2000, she co-founded a mentoring program for students of Ohio State to gain college credits for volunteering as mentors in elementary and middle school students with two Ohio State University-Marion professors.
Near to her heart was the mentoring programs she co-founded at the Marion Juvenile Detention Center and Marion Juvenile Correction Facility. These programs provided speakers and mentors to work with the youth in building new paths for success and providing mentor support for their choices. The programs for working with youth offenders in various capacities was recognized in Columbus, Ohio by the State of Ohio Juvenile Corrections Governor's Advisory Board for their successful mentoring projects.
Sheryl founded and directed the "Marion's Shining Stars Program" which provided college scholarships for high school seniors in Marion County. This program provided over $60,000. in scholarships.
Prior to serving as the executive director, she had also been employed through the years by the Quaker Oats Company, the Education Department of Macola and was a case manager and then promoted to Personnel Director for Marion County Job and Family Services.
Growing up as a 10 year 4-H member inspired Sheryl to serve 4-H through the years as a 4-H club advisor and judge at the Marion County Fair. She also served on the 4-H Advisory Council and was awarded the 4-H Alumnae of the Year Award. After her retirement and move to Indiana, she continued to volunteer with 4-H programs and to judge at 4-H Junior Fairs.
Other memberships during her career included: Marion Industrial Club, Marion Noon Kiwanis, Women's Business Council, Ohio Youth Services Advisory Board, Tri-Rivers Culinary Arts Advisory Board, United Way volunteer, W.I.N.S. and W.I.N.S. Plus Volunteer, Interview Coach Miss Ohio Scholarship Contestants. Her community involvement included 10 years on the D.A.R.E. Board, 17 years on the Elgin School Board, 7 years on the Tri-Rivers Board, a member of the Ridgedale Community School Board, the YMCA Board of Directors, advisor for Elgin Drill Team, Cancer Stereo-thon volunteer, Ohio School Board Association, President of the Ohio Human Services Personnel Association, and cheerleading advisor at Elgin Junior High School. Sheryl also enjoyed serving as a volunteer with the Marion Popcorn Festival and served as Co-Director of the Miss and Ms. Popcorn Programs for two years.
Since retirement and her move to Indiana, Sheryl was also a member of the Indiana Farm to School Network Steering Committee, a 4-H project judge at various fairs, and a volunteer at local schools. She also volunteered and wrote and received grants to fund programs for local schools.
Sheryl was the recipient of numerous awards for her volunteerism and leadership including: the Women's Business Council Athena Award, recognized by the 120th Congressional Assembly of Ohio as a Marion Distinguished Citizen, the Harding Youth Award for dedication and service to the youth of Marion County, and the Tri-Rivers Lautenslager Distinguished Service Award.
Sheryl's greatest joy was her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren. She loved following them and celebrating all their successes. She loved watching her children participate in sports, 4-H, FFA, speech and drama and volunteering in the community. Their marriage brought two new wonderful spouses as Sean married Carey and Shanna married Jason. Then how blessed she was to be part of the lives of her five beautiful grandchildren and her great-granddaughter. She was so enormously proud of all of them and the joy they gave her was beyond measure.
In her free time, she completed the genealogy records for her family as far back as 1500. She also loved gardening and raised miniature roses, violets, and cactus.
Sheryl prided herself as a lifetime Ohio State and New York Yankees fan. She followed and cheered these teams throughout her life.
To Honor Sheryl's wishes there will not be a viewing or calling hours, she asked instead to celebrate her life in a way you see fit. If you must do something, take your family to a New York Yankees game or to watch the Ohio State Buckeyes play.
