JoAnne Westover
One of God's daughters returned to her heavenly home after an 85 year journey on this Earth. She experienced more of Heavenly Father's creations than most ever will. She began her travels as a flight attendant for Northwest Orient, flying in the United States and then transferred to Pan America to see the world. She visited most countries in the world during her lifetime and always had the next trip planned. She was stationed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Queens, New York City, and San Francisco, California. She drove a convertible Dodge Dart from New York to California with her mother Arvilla. While living in San Francisco she met David Westover. He saw her singing in the choir in the Stanford University single adult ward and told Bruce Galbraith, his friend and brother-in-law, that he would meet that girl.
They dated for one week and because JoAnn was planning to move to Hong Kong the next week, with 13 (his lucky number) red roses in hand David asked her to stay and marry him. She said she would stay and date him longer before she could decide. They were married June 15th, 1967 In the Logan Temple. For their honeymoon they traveled through Europe in a Mercedes Benz they purchased and had shipped home to sale. The sale of the car paid for the whole trip. They drove through Italy, France and Yugoslavia. They were older than most newlyweds at ages 28 and 26, they decided they wanted kids right away. They tried for 2 years without luck.
With hearts full of desire for a family they went to David's father for a blessing. Charles Marcus Westover had strong faith and they were blessed with a son just 9 months later. Charles David (Raquel Saenz), named for his father, grandfather and great, great grandfather. Having a large family was important to this couple and they didn't hesitate to add four more children in 6 years. Shad Bingham (Kathy Roberts), Tonya Jo (Bryce Johnson), Stacia (Samuel Cook), Devan Daniel (Rebekah Trimble).
With five small children, JoAnn stayed busy. A little too busy. She was always an artist, piano player, shopper and traveler. She never slowed down. She took singing lessons and oil painting lessons while the kids were young. She loved shopping at the mall and would hit the 75% off sales at Dillards. She filled her home with beautiful things from around the world and every yard sale she could find. Each one of her children and grandchildren have been blessed with homes full of art. She painted a water color for each grandchild and would give them one for a wedding present to hang in their new homes. She was also financially generous with them, so they could afford a down payment.
Each year JoAnn planned a family vacation. There are many highlights of the many Westover vacations. At first we would visit each of our cousins' homes and when we got a little older we started traveling to more foreign locations. Our first visit to Mexico was quite a story. We parked our car at the train station in Nogales and took the train to Mazetlan. When we returned our car had been stolen. We were able to spot it at the police station. The police had hot wired it with a door bell as the starter. They had been using it to transport cargo and did give it back when they were done with it. The window had been broken and all our ancient sleeping bags had been stolen. Our car insurance paid for the stolen items and we were excited to get new sleeping bags that weren't army surplus.
It's hard to believe that JoAnn grew up in the small farming town of Great Falls Montana. She was raised by her parents Clarence Elbert and Arvilla Margaret (Charlton) Bingham. Clarence worked at the Anaconda Copper Mining Smelter and ran a 2,000 acre wheat ranch. She and her four siblings enjoyed roller skating on the laundry room floor. The building had burned and the cement slab served them well. They also had an irrigation ditch out front, where they washed diapers and played during the hot summers. The chamber pot that lived on the back porch was always hidden when a car was heard turning up the drive. My mom's best friend was her sister Coleen (2yrs. older). Coleen was always quick to say I'm sorry. It was my fault, so they always got along. Coleen (Keith Standing & Clint Docstader) and Ray (Dora Call) are always calling to check on JoAnn, they have been a close family all these years. JoAnn is preceded in death by her brothers Roger (Becky Condie) and LaMonte (Jeanette Martineau).
As a 17 year old, JoAnn served a stake mission with Vicky Soha and was able to teach Don and Elenor Chevalier. They had a small child at the time. It was a great joy to JoAnn when she was invited to their family reunion many years later. They had eight kids who all served missions and she felt that her small service had spread through the world.
JoAnn attended BYU from 1956-1960. She earned a bachelor's degree in home economics and taught for 2 years at Ogden Jr. High. During her life she worked part time at several jobs including, substitute teacher, craft store, bridal shop, newspaper route coordinator, and cutting mat board for framing. JoAnn was an artistic homemaker sewing clothes for her girls, matching dresses for the dolls as well. She made hanging macrames and painted many works of art. She made bread and scones each week and sourdough pancakes every Saturday. Rhubarb pie was a special treat for her family and we always ate it hot with vanilla ice cream melting on top.
Missionary service was always an important part of our family life. All three of JoAnn's son's served missions in Honduras, California and Tennessee. David and JoAnn served a couples mission in Shepparton Australia during 2005. They served in a Somoan Branch for 18 months and fell in love with their branch. David was an institute and seminary teacher and served in the elders quorum. JoAnn was the primary president and pianist. They attended girls camp for the youth and cooked dutch oven meals each night as they camped under the Eucalyptus trees on the church farm of 115,000 acres. JoAnn has 21 grandchildren who have followed her example of blessing the lives of those around them. Many have served missions around the world, including: Florida (2), Georgia, New York, Washington (2), South Africa, Texas, Ohio, Japan, and Moldova. JoAnn has also been blessed with 7 great grandchildren.
JoAnn will be excited to be reunited with her husband, David Charles Westover, who preceded her in death, passing away from thyroid and lung cancer in February of 2007. JoAnn has maintained her home in Orem since 1976. She has a close bond with those neighbors and never wanted to leave. She served in her Orem ward in many callings, including Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society President and with the young woman as a teacher. As her hearing and memory declined she moved to Elk Ridge and lived with her daughter Toni, Bryce and Family. She could not remember if Toni was her daughter, sister or mother and frequently asked. She loved the mountains and enjoyed the deer that would visit as she sat on the porch waiting to be called home.
