As a youngster, Mom attended country school, attended Wessington Springs High School graduating in 1945 where she was voted Homecoming Queen and was a Majorette. She and others stayed in the dorm in the grade school and she ended up rooming in a bedroom in Mrs. Tiede's rooming house ½ block north of the high school. Mom's parents would purchase that house when they left the farm and moved "to town".
Joyce met Eldon Beckman in 1941 or 1942. She worked for Stub Rhodes at the Courthouse while waiting for Eldon to return from serving in the Navy (attached to the Marines) during World War II. Mom and Dad married August 20, 1946 at Templeton Congregational Church, rural Wessington Springs, with Al Beckman and Hermine (Wheeler) Bradley as their attendants who both were present at the folks' 50th Anniversary celebration in 1996.
Mom and Dad farmed and raised cattle nine miles SE of Wessington Springs for 43 years. Mom raised a garden, canned fruits and vegetables, raised little chickens which she and Grandma Eddy spent a long day late summer butchering for the freezer, froze tons of sweet corn and canned hundreds of quarts of the best dill pickles.
Dad and Mom opened their home to Muriel (Eastberg) Wenzel in April, 1966. They built a house and shed on Grandpa and Grandma Eddy's lots, Dad sold his beloved cattle, retired and they moved to town in September, 1989. They opened their home to Grandchildren Abbie and Grant during their high school years. Mom and Dad took many Farmers Union trips which they enjoyed, they loved to dance and spent time with treasured family and friends playing cards, visiting and eating!
Mom knitted countless baby sweaters, booties and afghans, sewed clothes for herself and her girls, was active in the UMC, WSCS, Evening Circle and was Treasurer for many years. She was a WS Carnegie Library Board Member and read countless books. As recent as two weeks ago, she asked CNA, Lori W., if they were going to the Library that day! She was a member of Vesper Chapter 81 Order of the Eastern Star. She also loved Charles Wysocki jigsaw puzzles. Mom always made everyone feel special on their birthday by cooking their favorite meal and birthday cake. She and Dad hosted Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners well into Mom's 80s.
Surviving to celebrate Mom's life are daughters Sandy Beckman Wenzel, Lisa (Phillip) Edwards, son-in-law Bill (Judy) Rimpo, adopted daughter, Murt Wenzel and family, grandchildren Abbie (Nick) Langerock, their children Dylan, Emma and Luke; Grant (Rachel) Edwards, their children Oliver, Samantha and Kelsie, Nicolas Rimpo and Megan Rimpo, sister-in-law Joannie Eddy, nieces Kaye, Marilyn, Sheila, Julie, nephew Dennis, Eddy and Bennett cousins and friends. Waiting for Mom in heaven were Dad, daughter Cindy, son Mark, brother Dihl, her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
