Kate Ryan was born in Ireland, child of John and Elizabeth Ryan. Her father, a tailor made his living in Brooklyn, New York. Her husband, John Edgar Bolger, a painter, died in 1878. Widowed with three sons, she joined John J. Curtin in a move to Socorro, New Mexico Territory in the 1880's, leaving her servant employment business. By 1887, she had resumed her employment business in San Diego, California. a few years later, she left John J. Curtin and married W.F. Hendsch, a miner. While her husband was traveling for work, she entered the mining business, even organizing her own crew of men to work in the Dulzura District. She and W.F. Hendsch divorced 1902. She was survived by sons William Bolger, Emanuel Bolger and George Washington Curtin, all living in Los Angeles.
