John is the son of John James Stanley and Martha Ellen (Hinton) Stanley (see siblings below). John Thomas (Jno T. M. in record) Stanley married Sarah L. Stanley on 29 Oct 1882 in Henry County, GA. John and Sarah's known children include Sam E., Pearl O., Roy, Louis, Mary Lucille, and Carl Stanley.

"John Thomas Stanley, 79, died yesterday at the residence, 363 Martin street, S.E. A native of Henry County, Stanley had been living in Atlanta for 50 years. He had been in bad health for several years. He is survived by three sons, Carl L. Stanley, of the U.S. Army; LeRoy Stanley, of New York City; and Louis Stanley, of New Orleans, La.; one daughter, Miss Lucille Stanley, of Atlanta; two brothers, B.L. Stanley of Empire, Ala.; and Levi Stanley, of Hanceville, Ala.; and one sister, Mrs. Dollie Bannister, of Cullman, Ala. Funeral services September 27, 1942 at 2:30 o'clock at the chapel of Sam R. Greenberg & Co. Lester A. Brown will officiate. Interment, College Park Cemetery."

The 1930 Census shows John was widowed and living in Atlanta with his daughter Lucille and her husband James M. Gunn, In the 1940 Census, John (widowed) was living with his daughter Lucille Stanley (formerly Mrs. J. M. Gunn).
------------
John's siblings include James H., Joseph J., Bright L., Mary, and Levi L. Stanley. Per the 1900 Census for Marthy E. Stanley, 5 of her 8 children were still living (should be 6 living). James H. had passed in 1902. John' father, J.J. Stanley, passed away June 1905 in Holly Pond, AL. His Jun 1905 news article indicated he left a wife and 5 children. Per the 1910 Census for Ellen Stanley (widowed, living with Levi), six of her eight children were still living (should be 4 living). J.J. Stanley was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Holly Pond.

Mary appears to be Mary "Dollie" Banister who was born Feb 1876 in GA per the 1900 Census, but was age 8 in the 1880 Census. Her memorial indicates born 19 May 1872. On 10 Oct 1892, she married Newman Thomas Bannister who already had children Fannie (married McAbee), Louis, and Allen from a previous marriage. Per the 1910 Census, Mary did not have any children. In the 1930 and 1940 Census, Mary is widowed and living Cullman Co., Alabama.

NOTE: The 1900 Census appears in error for John Thomas Stanley and his wife Sarah Leona. John was born 1862 based on the 1880 Census, but he was born 1863 per his obituary. No 1870 census was found. His brother James was born Aug 1861 per the 1900 Census and his memorial. Their parents, John J. and Martha E. (Marthy in marriage record), married 6 Dec 1860 in Henry Co., GA. Per the 1900 Census, Sarah (went by Leona) was born Jan 1862. That agrees with her age in her obituary. Leona's memorial shows her born 1866, which is per her death certificate -- the informant was J.T. Stanley. However, the 22 Jul 1870 Census shows her age 1 and the 17 Jun 1880 Census shows her age 11 (41 in 1910 Census). Leona's parents married in Henry Co., GA on 9 Apr 1867. Perhaps the ages after 1880 were "adjusted" because Leona was a few months shy of being age 14 when she married.
