dau of Abraham Mann and Tillie Rabinowitz
wife of Max Sacks 1901-1976
mother of Nechma, Rivqa, and Deborah

In late July of 1955 Anne Sacks booked a flight to Israel for herself and daughters Rennie and Deborah. The family first flew from New York City to London, England. On July 27, 1995, in London Anne and her daughters boarded a Lockheed Constellation passenger plane, El Al flight 402 to Tel Aviv. The aircrafts route was to fly to Vienna , Istanbul, Turkey and finally to Lod Airport, Tel Aviv, Israel. A 2300-mile flight.
The 1950's was the height of the Cold War between the Soviet Bloc and Western nations. The El Al Flight 402 was to fly from Vienna to Istanbul flying over a narrow corridor in Yugoslavia and Greece bordering Soviet Bulgaria. For unknown reasons the crew flew the Constellation over a corner of western Bulgaria that bordered Yugoslavia and northern Greece. The Bulgarian Air Force detected the passenger plane and sent two fighter aircraft to intercept the passenger plane. Air incursions were perceived by Soviet bloc countries as a provocation. Bulgarian Air Defense command claimed the fighters fired warning shots that were ignored by the planes pilots who altered course to return to Greek airspace. The Bulgarian pilots were ordered to shoot down the plane. The fighter aircrafts fire caused the plane to break up in midair and crash north of the town of Petrich, Bulgaria close to the border with Greece. Seven crew members and 51 passengers died in the crash. There were no survivors.
The Bulgarian description of events was disputed by Israel, the United States, and other western nations. The Bulgarians claimed the plane was considered hostile entering its airspace. The Bulgarians eventually accepted responsibility stating they had been" too hasty in shooting down the airliner " issued a formal apology and agreed to pay compensation.
The bodies of Anne Sacks, daughters Rennie, Deborah, the crew and other passengers were recovered and sent to Israel to be buried in a common grave. The bodies were buried in the Kiryat Shaul Cemetery in northern Tel Aviv. A memorial was constructed to honor the victims of El Al Flight 402.
