Joe received a Ph.D. in physics and went on a fellowship for one year in Sheffield, England. In 1970 he was hired by the University of Chicago, teaching physics. He later worked for Lucent Technology, Bell Laboratories, and the Illinois Institute of Art. He also authored two books - "On Civilized Stars" and "The Space Age Solar System."
Joe leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Judith A., and from his first marriage to Janet, a daughter, Sarah, and a grandson, Jacob.
To many, Joe is best known for his work on identifying and cataloging military aircraft and was a recognized expert in that field.
