PERHAM - In the early morning hours of Friday, December 22, 2023, Joyce Marie (Nutting) Barker, 87, passed away at her home in Perham, ME. She was born on this farmstead, on May 1, 1936, to Henry J. Nutting and Ethel M. (Anderson) Nutting.
An only child, Joyce grew up helping her parents on the family farm. The farm at that time grew potatoes, but eventually everyone would know it as the Nutting Egg Farm.
Joyce attended schools in Perham and Washburn. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1954, where she was involved in many activities and organizations, Band, Glee Club, School Reporter, Commercial Club, All-Aroostook Chorus, Dramatics, Senior Play, and DAR. She loved music and played the Tenor Sax and studied Piano for many years.
In 1955 Joyce married Gary W. Barker of Washburn, Maine. She had five children whom she loved dearly. As well as raising her family, she held may different jobs over the years, bank teller, waitress, deli manager, jewelry store manager, secretary, and caregiver.
Joyce was very active in her church, The Dunntown Advent Christian Church in Wade, ME. She loved working with the children, teaching Sunday school, youth groups, and especially the children's Christmas programs. She also loved helping organize the church suppers and events.
Joyce had an infectious laugh and loved being with people. She had a giving heart and would always lend a helping hand. She loved gardening and decorating the house, jigsaw puzzles, and crosswords. Everyday she couldn't wait to tackle the Bangor Daily Crossword, but what we remember most is the excellent and loving care she provided for her parents in their later years.
Joyce is survived by her five children, Carol (John) Blackstone, Bruce (Karen) Barker, Brett (Candace) Barker, Debra (Mark) Getty, Scott (Rebekah) Barker; her grandchildren, Steve (Stacy) Rodier, Bill Tasker, Tim (Mallory) Barker, Emily Barker, Shaina Tasker, Ari Getty, Angi Getty, Abby Barker, Colin Barker, and Nolan Barker; great-grandchildren, Logan Barker, Brayden Rodier, Avery Barker, and Beckett Wood.
A service of remembrance will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Perham, ME on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 10 a.m. with a reception following. Arrangements in care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home 30 Church Street, Presque Isle, ME 04769. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at: duncan-graves.com.
