Marilyn Joy Person, 87, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

Funeral services will take place at Living Word Free Lutheran Church on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery and a luncheon to follow.

Marilyn Joy Person (Jensen) was born on August 31, 1936, in Lake Preston. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at the North Preston Lutheran Church. She attended Lake Preston High School and General Beadle College.

She married James Person in 1956. They moved to Brookings, SD where Jim was attending College. She taught in rural schools near Bruce until Jim completed college.

After college they moved to Lake Wilson, Mn. where Jim taught returning veteran under the GI Ag. program. In 1962 they moved to Pierre, SD. Jim went to work for the Dept. of Social Service. They lived there for 40 yrs. Marilyn returned to college to complete her Degree in Education. While attending college she taught in rural school in the Pierre area. She graduated from Black Hills State in 1975.
Marilyn touched the lives of many children while she taught 2nd grade in the Pierre Public School's for 35 years, retiring in 1997. Marilyn had her dream job; teaching was the love of her life. Many of her students still contact her today.

Marilyn and Jim raised 3 sons while living in Pierre. Daryl, Dale, and David. They were active in Lutheran Memorial church. Marilyn was a Steven Minister with the church, a den mother for Boy Scouts. She was charter member of Beta Sigma Phi., a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She and Jim served on the Lutheran Brotherhood council for many years.

Marilyn and Jim loved to travel. Camping with the boys was the joy of summer. They traveled many miles with their little camper visiting each state and stopping to see state capitals. Boating on the Missouri River was also a special summer past time.

They traveled to Norway, Sweden, Russia, and Denmark. They did a tour of Europe, followed by trips to China, Tibet, Australia, Ireland, South America, Panama Canal, and the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents Otto and Ella Jensen and 4 brothers, Donald, Arden, Lyle, and David. She is survived by her 3 sons Daryl of Oldham, SD. Dale, (Patty), Pierre, SD. David (Stephanie), Harrisburg. One grandson Jason (Christine), great granddaughter Belle and great- grandson Hunter. 1 brother, Lonnie, 3 sisters Carol Kollis, LuAnn Decker, Sheryl Watson.
