William P. first enlisted with the 4th Battalion. Mississippi Cavalry, Company B. He enlisted for 1 year on 3/4/1862.

By the fall of Vicksburg (7/4/1863), he was with the 42nd Alabama Infantry as he is found on the prisoner records for Vicksburg. At Resaca, in May 1864, he was shot in the left thigh. It was reported to his family that he was dead. He was captured there, and held at Camp Douglas until 3/14/1865, when he was released to a Confederate hospital in Richmond. He returned home to a very surprised family. Also served with the 8th Confederate Cavalry.
