A memorial service for Lloyd G. "Mike" Ray, 89, of Myrtle Point, will be held at North Bend Church of Christ, 2761 Broadway St. Norm Russell will officiate. Cremation was at Ocean View Crematory in Coos Bay.

He was born March 9, 1913, in Myrtle Point, to Morris and Ollie Ray. He died Nov. 23, 2002, in Coos Bay.

Mike was born in the family home in Myrtle Point and was the oldest of four sons. In 1932, he graduated from Myrtle Point High School, where he enjoyed playing on both football and basketball teams. In 1943, Mike and longtime friend, Dugan Harrington, purchased 3,400 acres of beautiful forested land at the end of Bear Creek Road in Bandon, where they began a colorful career of "Harrington and Ray Logging" which lasted for 30 years.
In 1967, Mike joined the Coos County Mounted Sheriff's Posse, where he continued to work and serve as captain for two terms and held various other offices. One of his favorite annual events was heading up the parade and the car parking detail at the Coos County Fair in Myrtle Point. His other favorite pastimes included bird and deer hunting and his many dogs were definitely his best friends. He always looked forward to yearly trips to the cabin at Rincon de Guayabitos, Mexico, with lots of sunshine and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim and Bill Ray; son, Dean in 1996; and first wife, Betty Jo Ray, in 2000.
