Mary used the BENEFIELD spelling of the family name. Her death certificate identifies November 6 as her birth month and day, and she was 10 months old on the 1870 census, hence she was born in 1869. She was the first of her parents' 5 surviving children; there were also 3 children who died before the 1900 census. Per that census, her parents were married in 1868 or 1869 and based on censuses, appear to have lived in Gwinnett County all of their lives.

Mary's parents were farmers and all of their five children worked as laborers on the farm. Mary was one of two daughters who did not marry (Rena was the other), but continued living on the farm throughout their lives. When they were older, a nephew lived with them and did the farm work. Mary's death certificate notes that she was a lifelong resident of the Grayson community. She died at home. Her death certificate also states her burial place as Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
