During Operation JEB STUART a search and destroy mission in northern Quang Tri and Thua Tien Provinces Company A, B, and D of the 1st Battalion, 502d Infantry were hit with 40 rounds of 60mm and 82mm enemy mortar fire in their defensive positions in the vicinity of Xon Thuong Loc of Hai Lang District on the 9th of February. Eight soldiers were killed in the attack, twenty three were wounded and evacuated for treatment.
One of the casualties was SSgt Caron who was killed in action as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds, his body missing on the battlefield until recovered on February 17, 1968.
