She became a registered nurse and joined the Army. As a lieutenant working in the hospital during World War II, she took care of a young injured soldier, George (Bob) Meese, who would later become her husband.
They settled in the San Diego area where their son and daughter were born. Barkie worked along side her husband in their store, Meese's Market, for many years.
She belonged to Bonita Golf Club and loved playing golf. She and Bob also loved playing bridge.
She became a born again Christian and was very involved in the evangelistic ministry at Skyline Wesleyan Church. She had the privilege of leading many people to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. She taught Sunday School for many years and also loved teaching Catholic Bible Studies.
Bob and Barkie enjoyed a wonderful retirement of travel and spending time with friends and family. Up until her illness four years ago, she never stopped sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Barkie was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Barbara.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bob Meese, her son, Brent Meese, her daughter-in-law, Nancy Meese, her granddaughter, Sarah Wood, her sister Iola Brown, and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Diego Hospice. A memorial service celebrating her life was held November 20, 2010, at Sweetwater Community Church, 5305 Sweetwater Road, Bonita, CA 91902.
