BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:
Dr. Burges Johnson was born in 1877 in Rutland, Vermont. Dr. Johnson was well known
as an author and humorist, and had been a reporter for the Commercial Advertiser as well
as the New York Evening Post. He was a professor at Vassar, Syracuse University, and
finally Union College in Schenectady, New York. On July 15, 1904 Dr. Johnson married
Constance Fuller Wheeler. The couple moved into their Port Washington home,
"Borealis" on January 13, 1906. During his stay in the community, Johnson was active in
many community organizations, as well as the Progressive Party. The family left Port
Washington in 1915. Burges Johnson died on February 23, 1963.
