Leona B. Morrell, 94, of Moweaqua, passed away on February 3, 2024 in her home, surrounded by her family. She fought a long agonizing battle with Alzheimer's for 8 years. Her family is at peace knowing that God received a good servant. Her body and mind are once again healed, healthy and whole.
Private graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Moweaqua. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Thursday, February 8, 2024 in Seitz Funeral Home, Moweaqua. The family request in lieu of flowers, a memorial donation be made to Central A&M Activity Fund, for lunch, milk money, books or whatever needs there are.
Leona was born on October 1, 1929 in Mt. Carmel, IL, the daughter of Leo and Esther (Wright) Ulm. She attended Eastern Illinois University and was offered a teaching position in Moweaqua where she began her career in 1950. She taught for 34 years. She met Oliver R. Morrell in 1950 and they were married on June 7, 1952 in Moweaqua, IL. He preceded her in death on June 22, 2001.
Leona was an avid outdoor person who loved her big garden and animals, only surpassed by her love and devotion to God. She was an active member of First Christian Church where she taught Sunday School, helped in the nursery, helped with funeral dinners and volunteered at the nursing home.
Surviving are her children: Mike (Michele) Morrell, Virginia Morrell and Roger (Pam) Morrell, all of Moweaqua, IL; grandchildren: Will, Jenna and Daniel Morrell, Michael, Zachary (Megan Hays), David and Katie Wicklund, John (Lauren) and Tom Morrell; great-grandchildren: Nathan, Megan, Charlie, Jaxson, Zoey and Lily; and sisters-in-law: Marcella Dorsey and Phyllis Ulm.
Preceding her in death are her husband of 49 years, Oliver; parents; grandson, Adam Wicklund; two brothers; one sister; and several brothers and sisters-in law.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to Quad County Hospice for their loving care of Leona.
