Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Bolt was a British Home Child born in 1898 in South Shields, England. She was sent to Canada at age 13 in 1911 by the Barnardo Orphanage. She sailed from London on the Sicilian June 29, 1911 and arrived in Quebec July 11, 1911. From there, she was sent to Barnardo's distribution home known as Hazelbrae in Peterborough, Ontario. Her name is inscribed on the Hazelbrae memorial wall built near the location of the Home. Her parents were John Bolt and Elizabeth. Betty married Alfred George Crawford on August 17th 1920 in Brampton, Peel County, ON. They lived for many years at 1 Hillcroft Dr., Islington, ON until their passing. Together they raised 4 children: Gordon, Dorothy (who sadly drowned at age 17 months), Douglas, and Bruce, and also had many grandchildren. She had kept in touch with family in England until 1944. Her English family never forgot her. Despite having a rough start, she made a good life in Canada with her own family.
