Born in the village of Slapton in 1884. Moved to Exeter and married Mary Jane in 1902. They had 4 children together and lived at 72 Clifton St, Exeter.


Herbert enlisted in the 11th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regt and served as a Pte (service No.34800). He was sadly killed in action on April 24th 1917.

11th Batt: battle of Doiran, Macedonia. Attack by 26th Division's 78th Brigade on Turkish and Bulgarian troops. Captain Cooper wounded three times. Constant attack and counter-attack throughout the night. Some 350 of an initial battalion strength of 500 were lost on 23/24 April.
