WHITESIDE, Samantha Jane PATTERSON Jones--Mrs. Samantha J. Whiteside passed away Monday. She has made her home for the past several years with her daughter, Mrs. Eli Couch. Mrs. Whiteside was a fine old lady, our good true friend, and it is with sorrow that we note her passing. [Gentry Journal-Advance--Gentry, Benton County, Arkansas--April 16, 1926]
Samantha Jane Patterson, the daughter of Washington and Catherine Patterson, was born in Belmont county, Ohio and died of hardening of the arteries at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eli Couch, of near Siloam Springs, Ark. April 12, 1926, aged 80 years, 2 months and 16 days. When a child she moved with her parents to Davis county, Iowa for a short time, then moved to Wayne county, Iowa where she spent a number of years and where she married Milton C. Jones, afterwards going to Independence, Kansas where they made their home. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union Elmer Jones and George, Mrs. Eli Couch and Mrs. George Vanzant. One son, George Jones, preceded her in death six years; the other three children survive her. After the death of her husband she moved to Siloam Springs in the year of 1878. She was married to A.P. Whiteside in 1869, with whom she lived until his death, December 27, 1920. She since resided with her daughter, Mrs. Eli Couch, until she departed this life. She is survived by one son, two daughters, 25 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and two sisters, also a host of friends. The deceased lived a consistent Christian life, having united with the Baptist church about 41 years ago. [Gentry Journal-Advance--Gentry, Benton County, Arkansas--April 23, 1926]

Samantha was the second wife of Andrew Posey Whiteside (1846-1920). They did not have any children together. Before marrying Andrew, Samantha was married to Milton C Jones, b. abt 1830 in Kentucky. Per the 1880 federal census, Samantha and Milton were living in Cherry Township, Montgomery, Kansas and had four children, all born in Kansas. Armelda C b. abt 1872, Warren E b. abt 1874, Elizabeth F b. abt 1877 and John J b. abt 1879.Samantha's son, Warren E "Elmer" Jones, had a wife named Rillie M b. abt 1877 in Arkansas, and six children, all born in Arkansas.
