Staff Sgt. Ronald C. Blystone of Springfield, Missouri was a 1992 graduate of Glendale High School. Known as R.C., he loved to scuba dive and had recently been certified in deep-water rescues. He was also an avid football player and wrestled while in High School. He loved watching the Kansas City Chiefs, scuba diving, and serving his country. Above all else he loved being with his wife and children. The lifelong resident of Springfield joined the United States Army in February 1994, and married Kelly the following June. He was featured on the cover of U.S. News & World Report magazine with a caption that read: "We're Winning." His awards and decorations include two Bronze Stars, The Purple Heart, the Expert Infantry Badge, Valor Unit Award, four Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Awards, two Iraq Campaign Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, two Army Service Ribbons, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal. R.C. did four overseas deployments including one in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and three deployments to Iraq. He died in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when he encountered small arms fire during a dismounted patrol at age 34. He was serving on his third deployment. He was preceded in death by his grandparents William C. and Ponnie Bright, Springfield, and Fred and Velma Blystone, El Dorado Springs.
