Augustus was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Keller. He immigrated to America with his family in 1854 and they resided in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. In 1880, he was a laborer at the Furnace and was living (as a boarder with the Heater Family) in Hardyston Township, Sussex County, New Jersey.
In 1886, he married Mary A. Lewis and they had three children: Elizabeth, John, and Thomas. The family first resided in Wharton, Morris County, New Jersey and then in Dover, Morris County, New Jersey.
In the later years, Augustus and Mary moved to Massachusetts to be closer to Mary's daughter, Alice Flood Sullivan (from her first marriage to Michael Flood).
