DR. WHITNEY GORDON SAMPSON, 67, after a brief illness with cancer, died on July 18, 2000 with his family by his side. He was a highly regarded Ophthalmologist who made many scientific contributions and held many leadership positions in organized medicine. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Amanda Cox, and also his parents Steven & Beryl Sampson.


Dr. Sampson is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Marlys Hayward Sampson and their three children, Linda Sampson Cox, wife of Paul M. Cox; Leslie Sampson Keller, wife of Scott R. Keller; and Whitney Gordon Sampson , Jr. Dr. Sampson is also survived by his six grandchildren, Cameron Cox, Natalie Cox, Christopher Keller, Rachel Keller, Peter Keller, and Caleb Gordon Keller; his sister Stephanie Sampson Urban, wife of Robert Urban; his niece Evelyn Urban; and his brother Robert L. Sampson.


Dr. Sampson was born on 2 October 1932 in Houston, TX. He attended the University of Houston from1950-1953, and graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in 1957. He served an internship at Hermann Hospital of Houston and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine affiliated Hospitals in 1961. In 1962 and 1963 he served as Lt. Commander U.S. Public Health Service in Washington DC. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1963. After an Honorable Discharge from the Public Health Service, he served in the Academic practice of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine from 1963 to 1965. From 1963 to 1993 he was in the Private Practice of Ophthalmology in Houston. During his years of Medical Practice he was on active staff of many hospitals in Houston. These included the Methodist Hospital, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, The Veterans Administration Hospital, Hermann Hospital and Heights Hospital. During his years of active medical practice he also made many scientific contributions. He was the author, or co-author of 32 publications in Medical Journals. He also prepared 11 scientific Exhibits for Medical Meetings. Finally he was the author, or co-author of 3 text books and 2 monographs.


Following his retirement in 1993 the Sampson 's have lived on their ranch in Weimer, Texas. Dr. Sampson often remarked that he was moving up in the world in his senior years as he was now "dodging cows." One of Dr. Sampson 's special interests was Parliamentary Procedure. He became a member of the American Institute of Parliamentarians and a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians in 1972. His Parliamentary ability stood him in good stead in the various organizations in which he served. Among the Senior Leadership positions that he held, was President of the Houston Ophthalmological Society, 1969-1970; President, Texas Ophthalmological Association 1975-1976; President, Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, 1975; President, American Association of Ophthalmology, 1980-81. He was elected President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) in 1984. As president of this organization Dr. Sampson made exelempary contributions. Dr. Sampson excelled in By-laws development and interpretation. Thus he served as Chairman of the By-laws committee of many medical organizations such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Association of Ophthalmology, Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmogists, American Intraocular implant Society, Joint Commission of Allied Health personnel in Ophthalmology, Medical Eye Services of America & Texas, The Texas Ophthalomogical Association and the Houston Ophthalmology Society. Dr. Sampson was a member of the Harris County Medical Society, The Doctor's Club of Houston, And also served on the Library Board of Weimer Public Library and was an active member of the Lions Club of Weimer.


In lieu of usual remembrances contributions may be made to the Contact Lens Association Ophthalmologists (CLAO-ERF), 721 Papworth, Suite 206, Metarie, La. 77005. The Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology ( Foundation - AAO ), 665 Beach Street, San Francisco, Ca. 94109. Lions Eye Bank of Texas or the Weimer Public Library.Visitation will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, Wednesday, July 19, 2000 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. The funeral services will be held Thursday July 20, 2000, at 1:00 P.M. in the Forest Pak Lawndale Main Chapel. Entombment will follow in the Abbey Mausoleum at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
