Recipient of The George Cross. He was Section Commander, 30th Unit.Warwickshire Battalion,Home Guard. He received his George Cross posthumously for a heroic action on the night of 15th/16th October 1940 when the Luftwaffe carried out a heavy attack on the city of Birmingham. He was called upon by the police to assist in rescue duty in Bishop Street where he found that a number of people were trapped in a cellar below a house which had been hit by a bomb.Taking charge of a party of six volunteers,he found that several people were trapped in a cellar. With great bravery,he managed to get two men out alive, and although he was obviously exhausted and suffering from the gas himself he insisted on going down a third time, but overcome by fumes and collapsed. He was dragged out by one of his comrades, but despite the attention of a doctor and nurse,it was impossible to revive him.He is buried at the Yardley Cemetery in Birmingham,Grave 46739.
