Dom Luciano Pedro Mendes de Almeida SJ., was one of Brazil's most famous and beloved bishops.

Born in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on October 5, 1930, to the renowned journalist Cândido Mendes de Almeida Júnior and his wife Emília de Melo Vieira Mendes de Almeida, he joined the Jesuits on March 2, 1947, following elementary studies at the Colégio Santo Inácio of Rio de Janeiro and the Colégio Anchieta of Nova Friburgo.

Mendes studied for the priesthood at the Casa de Formação dos Jesuítas of Nova Friburgo and at the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, from where he earned a doctorate in philosophy. He was ordained presbyter in Rome on July 5, 1958 and took his solemn vows through the Society of Jesus on August 15, 1964.

Back in his native country, Padre Mendes served as professor of philosophy between 1965 and 1972, instructor of the Terceira Provação within the Society of Jesus from 1970 till 1975 and member of the Directory of the Conferência dos Religiosos do Brasil.

At the age of 45, on February 25, 1976, Pope Paul VI appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of São Paulo and received his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Turris in Proconsulari on May 2, from Archbishop Paulo Evaristo Arns OFM., assisted by Bishop Clemente José Carlos de Gouvea Isnard OSB., and Archbishop Benedito de Ulhôa Vieira.

Following the retirement of Archbishop Oscar de Oliveira, Dom Mendes was named his successor for the Metropolitan See of Mariana, Minas Gerais, at the age of 57.

From 1987 till 1994 Dom Luciano served as president of the National Conference of the Brazilian Bishops. Before that he was already its secretary general between 1979 and 1987, during which time the organization had an important role in the defense of Human Rights and Democracy. He also served as vice-president of the Conselho Episcopal Latino-Americano, member of the Comissão do Secretariado para o Sínodo, member of Comissão Pontifícia Justiça e Paz and delegate of the Special Brazilian Episcopal Assembly for the Synod.

The Archbishop passed away in the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculdade de Medicina da USP of São Paulo at the age of 75, of respiratory failure following complications from liver cancer and Hepatitis C from which he suffered during the last five years of his life.

In June 2011, the Bishops of Brazil during their 49th General Assembly, announced that the following August, the cause for Dom Luciano's beatification would be introduced through the Archdiocese of Mariana.
