TAMPA BAY, Fla. - Frederick MacRae "Mac" Marriott, 74, of Tampa, Fla., died Feb. 23 at Tampa General Hospital.
A longtime resident of Elk Rapids, he was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Detroit, the son of Edwin B. and Olive (MacRae) Marriott. He moved to MacDill Air Force Base in the Tampa Bay area from Yokota Air Force Base, Japan, in 1973. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1975 with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He served as a member of the 357th Fighter Squadron in England during World War II and was a veteran of the Korean War. He also served in Thailand and Japan.
He attended Western Michigan Michigan University, where he received his master's in education, majoring in history and physical education.
From 1978 to 1988 he was preventive maintenance supervisor for the City of Tampa Wastewater Treatment Plant.
He was a third degree Mason in Elk Rapids and Yokota, a member of American Veterans Post 114 in Elk Rapids, the American Legion Post 138 in Tampa, and the Dollar Club of Elk Rapids. He served as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Tampa and coached many Little League baseball teams in the United States and Japan.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, a brother, three granddaughters, one grandson, four great-grandchildren; and two nieces, a nephew, two great-nieces and one great-nephew. A memorial service arid burial will take place Memorial Day Weekend in Elk Rapids.
