Obituary


Wilson Edward Phelps, 73, a native of Tyrrell County, died Sunday in a hospital.


He had retired from farming. He was a member of Scuppernong Church of Christ and Providence Masonic Lodge 678.


In his retirement, he continued to carry on an active schedule, handling delivery of newspapers for The Coastland Times and News and Observer, serving a multi-county region, as well as handling other freight.


Survivors include his wife, Alethea Ambrose Phelps; three sons, Charles T. Phelps and E.H. Phelps, both of Creswell, and Wilson E. Phelps Jr. of Upper Marlboro, Md.; three sisters, Emma Jane Ambrose of Creswell, Nancy Snell of Emporia, Va., and Mary Witt of Baltimore; and four grandchildren.


Funeral services were held Wednesday in Scuppernong Church of Christ by the Rev. Mark Woolard. Burial with Masonic rites was in the family cemetery Walker Funeral Home is in charge.


Mr. Wilson had a good singing voice, & he sang in a group called "The Grapes" at Scuppernong COC.
