Born in Hynes California, a dairy community that is now part of Paramount in Los Angeles, California


Married Marie Van Hal of Pella, Iowa in 1957. They had three children, Jaci, Martin and Robert.


He was preceded in death by siblings, Adriana Uttecht, Conelius Van Leeuwen, and Neelje Pyton.


He attended Bellflower High School in California. He continued his education at Central College in Pella, Iowa, attaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1950. He then earned his Master of Arts in Berkeley, California, and a Ph.D in Philosophy at University of Iowa in 1961. He became the Halliday Chair of Philosophy at Hanover College in January 1958, retiring in 1996. He also taught at the Perdue University extension in Versailles, indiana. He published two books and several articles relating to 17th century British skepticism.


He was an active member of Hanover Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons, Board of Elders, and various committees. He also was involved as a leader of Cub Scout Troop 708, as Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 708, and other positions from 1967 until 1980. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and the House of Hope.


He donated his body to the Indiana University for teaching and/or medical research purposes, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery at Pella Iowa at a later date.
