Though James was a farmer by trade, he was also a well respected preacher in his community. His ministry included Bear Creek Baptist Church (12 consecutive years) and Harmony Grove Baptist Church (five years). He is also credited as being instrumental in the formation of the Pleasant Grove Association of Missouri Baptist Churches.

Gravesite Details
James has two stones. Though original is still legible, descendants Hugh and Julian Luck added a second one that also included burial information for Lucy. Gravesite is in the NW corner of cemetery. Both brothers & 7 children also buried here
