The two trees employees of the Newton Factory Outlet Stores planted last week will remind them of a lot of things.

They'll remember Carol Cook and her kindness. They'll remember her grandson Bailey Cook's laughter.

And when they see those trees, employees will remember with pain the tragic accident that took the lives of a friend and a "bundle of joy."

Carol Cook, 63, and her 3-year-old grandson, Bailey Cook, died May 8 in a two-vehicle wreck on I-135 in McPherson County.

Carol Cook, whose husband Bruce Cook manages the mall, co-managed a restaurant in the mall with her son, Bailey's father Brad Cook.

For two weeks after the accident, mall employees raised money to buy a flowering plum for Bailey and a redwood dawn in memory of Carol Cook.

The trees were planted in the mall's Harborview Golf Course.

"She was just a soft, kind, sweet lady, and her grandbabies were her life," said Nancy Schmidt, manager of Kitchen Collection, one of dozens of stores at the Newton Factory Outlet Stores. "She was just an amazing woman, and I can just so see her out in nature with her grandbabies.

"Bailey was just like a little angel on earth," she said. "He was such a sweet, wonderful bundle of joy."

Schmidt said Carol Cook was devoted to supporting her husband and the work he did at the mall.

"Is there a more beautiful way to remember them lovingly for years and years?" Schmidt said of the trees. "Every year, they will be a sign of beauty."

The employees, she said, also wanted to show their support for Bruce Cook.

"He does a lot of work and has a tremendous load on his shoulders," Schmidt said. "We wanted to show him that we're here for him. At times like this, that's when you need to know people care about you and are there for you."

Bruce Cook, Schmidt said, has managed to make the mall a vital part of the Newton community.

"In all the decisions he makes, that's a central focus," Schmidt said. "That's an enormous undertaking. He has tremendous leadership and cares about what the (store) managers think. ... He's extremely community oriented, and so was Carol."

Bruce Cook said the trees are beautiful.
