William was the son of Solomon Flippo and Abigail Johnson. He married Mary Elizabeth Simmons March 1861 in Hamilton County, TN. Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of William Monroe Simmons and Nancy Ann Gibreath. During the Civil Willam served as a private in Company F 11th Regt., Ohio Cav. and he received a military pension. William and Mary Elizabeth moved from Hamilton County, Tennessee to Newton County, Arkansas about 1872. Mary Elizabeth died in 1903 and William married Rosa Villines on 4 May 1904. Rosa died 17 February 1905 and William married her sister Margret Villines on 24 June 1905. William Haywood Flippo and Mary Elizabeth Simmons were the parents of nine children:

William Haywood served in both the Confederate and Union Armies during the Civil War. He first enlisted in the Confederate Army in Fannin Co., Georgia 15 February 1863 Company D, 6th Regiment, Georgia Calvary. He was captured by the Union forces in Kentucky on May 8, 1863 and was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio. He arrived there May 31, 1863 and signed a Release on June 3, 1863 and enlisted in the Union Army that same day. He was discharged May 2, 1866 in Omaha, Nebraska. On 14 August 1893 William applied for a pension based on his military service in the Union Army.

William and Mary Elizabeth were my ggrandparents and their son James Monroe Flippo was my grandfather.
