Obituary, Daily Sentinel (Rome, NY), 20 Mar 2008:

Giles E. Abbe, 87, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 in the comfort of his home with his loving family by his side. Giles was born in Westmoreland, June 17, 1920, son of the late Elisha M. and Mary Ellen Walker Abbe. He graduated from Westmoreland Central School Class of 1939. He attended Morrisville College graduating in 1941 with a degree in Dairy Husbandry. Following his graduation he returned home to run the family farm with his father, where they bottled and delivered their milk to many local families.

On April 27, 1957 he was united in marriage to Eleanor E. Hemming at Bartlett Baptist Church. Giles and Eleanor shared a wonderful marriage of mutual love and devotion for almost 51 years. The couple owned and operated Abbe's Dairy until their retirement in 1986.

Giles was very active in his community. He was a lifelong member of the Bartlett Baptist Church, Farm Bureau, Ziyara Shriner Temple, Oneida Cooperative Extension, Westmoreland Grange and the Clinton-Hampton Lodge. He also served as a board member with North Country Insurance for several years, traveling to many places. He was one of the founding fathers of the Stanwix Heights Volunteer Fire Department with 65 years of service. More recently he was a member of the Westlanders Senior Citizen Group.

Giles was a wonderful, devoted husband and family man with a great sense of humor, who always found good in everyone. He was liked by all and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; daughters, Lorraine Madell of Florida, Audrey Kessler of North Carolina, and daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and John Storey, Michele and James Oakes; a son, Aaron Abbe of Westmoreland; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; many special nieces and nephews; and a very special granddaughter, Jaime Kierpiec of Westmoreland.
