Abel Gates was the son of Nathan and Abigail (Knowlton) Gates of Gardner, Massachusetts. Abel was a corporal in the 5th Regiment, U.S. Army Regulars, from 1820 to 1825 during the Frontier Wars in the Michigan Territory. As lieutenant of the Fifth Rifle Regiment, Company C, he served under General Snellen in the war of 1812, participating in the battles of New Orleans and White Plains. At the close of the war he engaged in farming for four years, then in the packing business in Missouri. He married Mary Burns following his army service and first settled in Pike County, Missouri where all of there ten children were born. Later he lived in Cole County and finally in Adair County where he passed away.
