Profile: 'Reely' Vest was a local entrepeneur in the White Gate, Va. area. He was widely known in the community and highly respected. He was often generous and always kind. He had a large home where he often offered lodging to his relatives and to neighbors less fortunate than he. Rev. Robert Sheffey (circuit preacher famous in southern WVa & western Va)in his elder years sought refuge in the Vest home and died there.

Funeral services for Lucian Aurelius Vest, 82, will be held at Mt. Zion Methodist Church, White Gate, at 2PM Thursday, Sept.8. Interment will be in the Stinson Cemetery. Mr. Vest died yesterday Tuesday Sept. 6 at 6:30 AM after a long illness at his home in Poplar Hill. Survivors include his second wife, Mrs. Otie W. Vest and these children by his first marriage: Clarence A. Vest, Bedford, Robert C. Vest and Edward S. Vest, both of White Gate. These brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Sidney Underwood, Poplar Hill, Mrs. C. L. Peters, Louisa, Mrs. J. L. Johnston, Trigg, John C. and Samuel J Vest, White Gate. Mr. Vest operated a telephone switchboard at White Gate for about 15 years. For at least 50 years at White Gate and later at Poplar Hill, he was in the undertaking business.
