George Lute Of Chesterton Dies Of Burns

Blast Follows Pouring of Kerosene on Fires. Clothes Enveloped in Flames as He Runs to Neighbor

INFANT DAUGHTER SAVED BY MOTHER

George D. Lute, age 32, automobile mechanic, living on the north edge of Chesterton, died at 3 o'clock this morning this morning at Christian hospital from the result of burns received Monday morning when he attempted to kindle a fire in the heating stove in his home.
Lute, according to his wife, arose around 6 o'clock amd in an attempt to hasten the fire, poured a quantity of kerosene from a five gallon can.
A terrific blast followed. When Mrs. Lute had reached the room, Lute had gained the outside. Panic stricken, he sought to beat out the flames which the flames which had enveloped him like a tourch.
Failing, he started running down the highway toward a neighbor's home. Mrs. Lute chased after him, but was forced to turn back to save her infant daughter who was in the burning home.
Lute collapsed before he reached his destination. Two men coming down the highway saw him and rushed to his aid. Coats were torn off and the flames smothered.
Lute, unconsious, was carried to a farmhouse. Medical aid was given and he was brought to Christian hospital here.
All the clothing was burned from his body, and the flesh in many places badly scared. Little hope was held for his recovery from the first.
The Lute home was practically destroyed by the fire that followed.
Lute is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lute, residing in Chesterton.
For a number of years he had been working in the chemical plant at Chesterton, but of late had been working in automobile plants in Michigan.
The body was removed to a Chesterton undertaking establishment.
Funeral services will be held Thursday from the house of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Schlutz, parents of Mrs. Lute, at Furnessville, and from the Evangelical church at Porter, with burial in the Chesterton cemetery.

LUTE FUNERAL SERVICES HELD
Funeral services for George D. Lute, were held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the Evangelical church of Porter. Rev. Mr. Palmer of that church conducted the services which were largely attended by friends and relatives.
The singers were Mrs. L. C. Bay and Miss Dorothy Bay.
Pallbearers were John Biggs, Claude, Fred, Ben, Raymond and Howard Lute.
Burial was in Chesterton Cemetery.
